OCEAN AND COMMUNITY
A Story of Love, Family, Friendship and Positive Energy, Monstro and the Kelp Kids is Dedicated to all Walks of Life and Celebrates Youth and the Power of the Open Sea
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (December 2014) — San Diego artist and creator, Michael Amorillo, announces the debut of Monstro and the Kelp Kids, a children’s book based on his love for the ocean and the animals that call it home. Based on Monstro, a large and lovable sea monster, and his eclectic group of fun-loving friends, Amorillo’s book concept was born at the kelp beds of Grandview Beach in Encinitas, Calif.
“I’m so proud to launch my first book and spread the overwhelming joy that the ocean ignites in so many. Every time I enter the water, a transformation instantly occurs both physically and mentally,” said Amorillo regarding his inspiration for the book. “The friends and people in the community you see in the water on a day to day basis become a second family. We come from all walks of life and ethnicities. The love we share for the ocean and the animals that call it home allows us to tap into our childlike spirit and illuminate a positive energy to the people around us.”
As both the author and artist, Amorillo showcases the Kelp Kids wandering the world on a giant purple whale, optimistic and open-hearted. Exploring different countries and cultures while learning about language, food, music and other wonderful things, the Kelp Kids celebrate the diversity of each other and each new place they visit. With characters from Southern California to Finland, to Japan to Australia, the Kelp Kids’ mantra is “family first.” Their battle cry “Kelp Kids Unite!” portrays the bond between a diverse group of kids around the world and their connection to one another.
“If you believe in mentorship and spreading knowledge to the younger generation, acceptance of cultural and ethnic diversity, and a love for our ocean and environment, you’re a Kelp Kid,” said Amorillo. “I hope to inspire and foster Kelp Kids throughout the world with this book.”
